The next meeting

March 20, 2008

Next meeting: April 29, 6:30pm, OCLC.

Many thanks to George Needham from OCLC for arranging our next in-person meet-up of the group. He checked every library in the area with a meeting room and decent parking, and none of them were available on April 29.

Instead, he’s booked a presentation room at OCLC that easily seats 40, and there’s room to spread out if we want to split into small group discussions.

Bonuses: OCLC provides easy access off 270, a wireless network, and free parking.

Here are directions:

Take I-270 to the Rt. 33/Rt. 161 exit in Dublin. Head east on Rt. Dublin Granville Road, moving into the left turn lane. Turn left onto Post Road, then take first right (less than 50 yards) onto the OCLC campus. At the stop sign, turn left. Go to the Kilgour Building (NOT the conference center), directly in front of you. Follow the road to the right at the split, and park in lot #1, directly on your left.

If all else fails, call George’s BlackBerry, 614-256-5206.

I’m very excited to participate in the forming of the Columbus SMC.

I would like to see additional resources used to help get more people involved. A Google Group would be a big start. A forum would be a great addition as well. Virtual meetings could be added too. They can be held using a service such as Talkshoe or BlogTalkRadio and the recorded session can be distributed as a podcast. Both of these virtual services are free and all one needs is a phone and to participate. We’re using some of these modern resources to help get people involved with the planning of PodCamp Ohio. It gives event organizers across the state additional opportunities to get involved.

Ok- so for those of you checking for an update. Sounds like Comfest isn’t interested in having us provide WiFi. I haven’t given up but they are pretty adament that this isn’t something they want to include at the event. I’m a bit disappointed because I feel like the organizers are missing out on a great opportunity to expand “community” but I respect their feelings about it. They’ve offered to let us do some sort of class or presentation but I’m not sure how useful something like that would be if we are doing so at an event that specifically bans our chosen form of community communication. So, like I said, I haven’t totally given up on this but I think we may need to consider other possibilities.

Are your meetings open? I am interested in how social media relates to real life and community in Columbus from a couple different angles. I’m not sure how much I have to offer this group, but I would be interested in the discussion.
